Cricket plays a pivotal role in the story of the great film Lagaan which was also nominated for the prestigious Oscar Awards. The inspiring story of Lagaan is based on a cricket match between the rustic villagers and their English rulers. The villagers are supposed to be underdogs in comparison to the English who are highly proficient in the game of cricket. The terms agreed upon before the start of the match were that if the villagers would win, the English rulers would waive off their Lagaan or the land tax of 3 years. As the match proceeds, the viewers are thrilled to see the defiant fight of the ill-equipped villagers against the great English team. Ultimately, the team of the villagers rose to the occasion and gave the English a crushing defeat.
