JEDDAH: The National Water Company (NWC) has allegedly refused a request by the Jeddah Mayoralty to stop pumping water from residents' underground tanks into the streets in Al-Samir 4 District in east Jeddah. The mayoralty says that this creates problems because mayoralty workers then have to pump this water from the streets. This is happening as the mayoralty has sought the help of the Jizan and Qassim mayoralties to pump storm water from most of the streets and roads in the governorate. According to an official source, the mayoralty had asked the NWC to pump the underground water into small tanks which could be placed in front of houses. However, the NWC has allegedly refused to respond despite the mayoralty's repeated pleas. The source said that NWC was trying to help out but by doing so was worsening the problem instead of solving it. The source said the mayoralty tried to seize the company's water pumps but this was not possible because the pumps are fixed onto trucks.
