DAMMAM: A massive fire broke out in the Al-Mojil building in the heart of Dammam city center near the famous Seiko building early on Friday morning destroying more than 15 shops. No loss of life was reported in the blaze that began around 2:30 AM and spread rapidly. “Several shops selling readymade dresses, shoes, toys, watches and pharmacies were destroyed. More than 10 small shops and family apartments nearby were partially affected as a result of the blaze,” said a Civil Defense officer who was at the site. It is unclear how the fire started, however, although an electrical short circuit is thought to have been the catalyst. Losses have not yet been estimated. The Al-Mojil building is one of the oldest three story buildings in the city of Dammam and is more than 35 years old. More than 30 shops are located on the first and second floors with 20 expatriate families also living there. Fire brigade teams, using ladders, rescued one Pakistani family which was stuck in the building. Since the fire was in a busy center in the city, more than 25 firefighting trucks were deployed using foam and water. Traffic police blocked the main roads at both ends causing heavy traffic congestion in the city. There are some old buildings in the city center which have not been renovated and are not properly maintained. The lack of safety measures and poor electricity connections can cause fires or the collapse of the buildings.
