Pens get rare penalty goal to beat Red Wings
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 20 - 01 - 2011

PITTSBURGH: Chris Conner scored on Pittsburgh's first successful penalty shot in nearly four years to help the Penguins to a 4-1 win over the injury-thinned Detroit Red Wings in the NHL Tuesday.
Jordan Staal added his third goal in as many games as the Penguins saw off their Eastern Conference title rival despite the absence of Sidney Crosby.
Connor converted a penalty in the first period to make it 2-0, and score Pittsburgh's first penalty in almost precisely four years.
Johan Franzen scored Detroit's only goal.
Flyers 3, Capitals 2: In Philadelphia, Andrej Meszaros scored 1:07 into overtime to bail out Philadelphia after it blew a third period lead against Washington.
Meszaros scored with a wrist shot just outside the slot that beat Semyon Varlamov.
Jeff Carter and Claude Giroux each scored for the Flyers but Mike Knuble and Alex Ovechkin replied in the third period to rally the Capitals.
Avalanche 4, Canucks 3: In Denver, David Jones scored two goals, including the winner with 2:52 remaining in overtime, as Colorado downed Vancouver.
Jones lunged at the puck to score the decisive goal late in a power play after Tomas Fleischmann sent a pass into the goal crease.
John-Michael Liles and Milan Hejduk also scored for the Avalanche, who beat the Canucks for the first time in five attempts.
Alexander Edler, Ryan Kesler and Sergei Shirokov scored for Vancouver.
Predators 5, Coyotes 2: In Glendale, Arizona, J.P. Dumont got his first hat trick in 9½ years to help Nashville beat Phoenix.
Bruins 3, Hurricanes 2: In Raleigh, North Carolina, Milan Lucic scored the third-period winner for Boston against Carolina.
Lightning 3, Blue Jackets 2, SO: In Tampa, Florida, Ryan Malone scored the only goal of a shootout in the fourth round to lift Tampa Bay over Columbus.
Sabres 2, Canadiens 1: In Buffalo, Jason Pominville scored a power-play goal a minute into overtime to give Buffalo victory over injury-depleted Montreal.
The Canadiens played much of the game minus two forwards.
Blues 2, Kings 1: In St. Louis, Erik Johnson scored the go-ahead goal on a third-period shot that slowly trickled between goalie Jonathan Quick's pads in St. Louis' victory over Los Angeles.
Ducks 2, Senators 1, SO: In Ottawa, Bobby Ryan scored in the shootout to give Anaheim a win over Ottawa.
Wild 4, Oilers 1: In Edmonton, Anton Khudobin stopped 31 shots to help Minnesota defeat Edmonton.
