RIYADH: Motor Vehicle Periodic Inspection (MVPI) is boosting vehicle safety in the Kingdom, according to Nabeel Bin Amin Mulla, Governor of the Saudi Arabian Standards Organization (SASO). The official made the comment during a visit Tuesday to the General Administration for MVPI and the technical inspection station in Riyadh. He said he was impressed with the developed and advanced inspection equipment and machinery. The governor and his accompanying delegation toured the General Administration for Inspection, information technology center, maintenance and logistic support center, training center, Riyadh MVPI station and the mobile inspection unit. They all witnessed how the vehicles were inspected. The delegation was given a detailed explanation of the procedures for vehicle inspection. They saw how the sophisticated computerized inspection equipment and machinery were operated to detect defects and disorders in cars. They also saw examples of minute but dangerous defects in vehicles that were detected by the inspection station. Mulla watched a presentation on the development of the information technology and computer center of the General Administration for MVPI and the future development plans for it that would reduce traffic accidents and cut down environmental pollution from car exhaust fumes. He also saw other measures being installed to improve operations and services for motorists. The periodic technical inspection is carried out according to the inspection procedures guidebook approved by the Traffic General Administration. The motor vehicles inspection procedures guidebook No. 1997/1284 was prepared by SASO in 1998 and that is also the Gulf Specifications No. 1997/971.
