KHOBAR: Sarah Al-Ruwaili, a female Saudi student, achieved first place in the international examination supervised by Cambridge University in London for the month of June 2010. Al-Ruwaili, who wants to travel abroad to study engineering, said she entered the examination with the objective of proving Saudi female students' capabilities to compete and get advanced positions in her career. She pointed out that she was able to achieve first place in Arabic language and gave her best in her English exam as well. She wanted to prove the bond between Arabs and their mother tongue, which is a source of pride for them. Assim Al-Ghazzi, Director of Examination Services in the British Council, said more than 120 students throughout the Kingdom won awards for their exceptional performance in the examinations. At least 30 students scored the highest world marks and 26 students obtained the highest marks in Saudi Arabia in one subject and the highest cumulative marks in many subjects. The Saudis' performance exceeded that of thousands of candidates worldwide who sat for the exams for secondary education and the international A and AS advanced levels, he added. William Bickerdike, regional director for Cambridge International Examinations in the Middle East, North Africa and Pakistan, said, “With great pride, I congratulate the students in different parts of the country. These results reflect the huge talent in Saudi Arabia, not only among students, but also among teachers.” The students achieved their successes, thanks to their hard work and support from their schools and families, he added.
