The Municipality of Dammam conducted saturation drive starting this week against establishments violating municipal rules and regulations, particularly on hygiene and sanitation. So far over 100 establishments have been ordered closed. They will remain closed until such time that they are able to comply with the requirements of the municipality. Most of the establishments are hotels, food eateries and coffee shops. A spokesman of the municipality said most of the establishments which were either fined or closed were small hotels, restaurants and other commercial shops. During the drive, inspectors also found out that there were many illegal workers working and hiding in these establishments, particularly in small hotels and eateries. Hundreds of kilos of rotten meat and other expired items were also confiscated during the drive. “The law must be strictly enforced in order to make sure that customers are given only good quality food and to reduce the risk of customers falling ill due to poor quality food prepared under unhygienic conditions. Municipal inspectors are also focusing on expatriate residents who are producing goods and distributing the products to unsuspecting customers. __
