JEDDAH: A Supreme Court committee has submitted a proposal to the King to raise blood money for premeditated murder and manslaughter to SR400,000 and for accidental killing to SR300,000. The current amounts are SR110,000 and SR100,000 respectively, which was approved in 1980. A justice official said the new assessments are expected to be endorsed. The committee consists of judges and specialists who conducted studies, visited camel markets and met experts in the field. He said the proposed amounts were suggested by consensus by the committee members who took into consideration social and economic factors. These new assessments come 30 years of the last increases were approved. The changes had come in response to calls from scholars and intellectuals. The Shariah rule on the issue stipulates that a Muslim's blood is worth 100 camels.
