RIYADH: A team of surgeons and oncologists at the Yamammah Hospital in Riyadh has succeeded in removing a large tumor, 16 centimeters in diameter, from the uterus of a 35-year-old woman. The operation lasted one-and-a-half hours and was described as ‘difficult'. The woman was admitted to the hospital suffering from fever and bleeding. After the case was diagnosed the doctors asked for an Image Resonance X-ray which showed that there was a large tumor stretching from the right anterior wall of the uterus to the pelvis wall, which led to serious complications. The medical team noted during the operation that the tumor was attached to various parts of the uterus and abdominal wall, making surgery risky. The operation was carried out under the supervision of Dr. Nawal Al-Bairkan, Head of the Gynecology and Obstetrics Department and Dr. Adel Salah, Gynecology and Obstetrics Consultant. They first opened the peritoneal cavity in an attempt to get the tumor out, but it would not budge. Following this, they opened a small hole in the membrane capsule and started slowly freeing the tumor from all sides until they pulled it out completely. They then returned the uterus to its normal place. The team said the case was one of the most difficult it had ever undertaken because any mistake could have affected the urethra, bladder and blood vessels.
