BREMEN: Defending champion Inter Milan slumped to a 3-0 defeat at Werder Bremen Tuesday to miss its chance to challenge for the Champions League Group A top spot. Already qualified for the round of 16, Inter, which finished second to Tottenham Hotspur, fielded a largely makeshift team as coach Rafa Benitez spared several top players for the Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi. Sebastian Proedl headed Bremen, already eliminated after a disappointing European season, into the lead in the 38th minute and Austrian Marko Arnautovic doubled the score. Substitute Claudio Pizarro sealed their win with a shot two minutes from time after Werder twice rattled the woodwork in a one-sided game. Tottenham Hotspur completed a marvellous first group-stage campaign when it drew 3-3 at Twente Enschede to secure top spot in Group A. Spurs, which scored 18 goals in their six group games, were gifted a fifth-minute lead with a Peter Wisgerhof own goal before Denny Landzaat equalised with a 22nd-minute penalty. In an action-packed second half Jermain Defoe put the Londoners ahead two minutes after the restart, Roberto Rosales levelled with a header, Defoe put the visitors ahead for a third time only for Nacer Chadli to curl in a brilliant free kick to make it 3-3 after 64 minutes. Barcelona second-string players Andreu Fontas and Victor Vazquez scored in a 2-0 win over Rubin Kazan Tuesday to ensure the Spanish club ended the group stage unbeaten. Barcelona had already sealed top spot in Group D. Rubin Kazan finished third in the group. FC Copenhagen became the first Danish club to reach the Champions League knockout stages Tuesday after it outclassed Greek side Panathinaikos 3-1. Manchester United sealed top spot in Group C when Anderson's equalizer earned a 1-1 draw at home to Valencia. Both sides had qualified for the knockout stages and it was a battle to determine first place in the group. Bursaspor earned its first point in the Champions League in its final Group C match, scoring late to earn a 1-1 draw against Glasgow Rangers. Both teams had already been eliminated. Jose Jurado and Benedikt Howedes scored to give Schalke a 2-1 win at Benfica, the German club's first away win securing top spot in Group B. Olympique Lyon grabbed a late equalizer to earn a 2-2 draw at home to Hapoel Tel Aviv in a Group B game.
