MADINA: The Saudi woman in custody for inflicting grievous bodily harm on Indonesian maid Sumiati Mustapa has been examined to determine her mental health, Al-Watan Arabic daily reported Tuesday. Sources told the newspaper that the 54-year-old woman was taken to a hospital for psychiatric analysis and that the resultant report is an “important measure usually taken in criminal incidents to determine the extent of the accused person's responsibility”. The report, the sources said, is taken into account by the judge hearing the case when pronouncing his sentence. The woman, who has only been named by her initial “Z.S.”, is currently being held in custody solitary confinement as a “precautionary measure”, where she is also being refused visitors and telephone calls, Al-Watan said. It was reported Monday that the Human Rights Commission (HRC) has appointed a lawyer to represent the Indonesian woman, Sumiati Mustapa. Mustapa was first admitted to King Fahd Hospital on Nov. 1 in a coma and with extensive burns and parts of her scalp missing after being allegedly attacked by her sponsor, and Al-Watan reported an HRC statement expressing the “extreme concern” of its president Bandar Al-Aiban for the 23-year-old's case. “An HRC team has met with the Indonesian resident to check on her condition and has asked the hospital to provide a full medical report,” the newspaper quoted the statement as saying. “The HRC has also contacted the Bureau of Investigation and Prosecution in Madina and asked to be kept informed of progress in the investigation.” The statement said it had also appointed a lawyer to represent Mustapa “before the relevant authorities in public and private legal action”. Saudi Gazette reported Sunday that Mustapa's Saudi sponsor had been charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm and held in custody at Madina's General Prison following evidence from her son. He also denied his mother's claims that Mustapa had attempted to commit suicide. His mother was later reported as having admitted to inflicting burns on Mustapa with an electric iron. Mustapa, who is recovering in hospital and will require plastic surgery, told investigators that she was subject to abuse from the time of her arrival in the Kingdom three months ago. She was first admitted to a private hospital where doctors deemed her injuries too severe for them to treat and transferred her to King Fahd Hospital. Mustapa, Al-Watan said, underwent reconstruction surgery on her scalp at the hospital on Sunday.
