DAMMAM: Residents here have welcomed the municipality's introduction of environmentally-friendly color-coded waste bins in the region. Red bins are for glass waste, blue for paper waste, yellow for tins, and green for plastic waste. Authorities have already placed around 400 bins in the Eastern Province. Residents here also want the municipal authorities to issue smaller color-coded bins that can be used at houses and apartments. Muna, a housewife, told Saudi Gazette that she was very happy to see the color-coded waste bins in the city. She already has four bins at her house to sort out garbage. “This way, I can teach my children the importance of recycling and how some waste like plastic can harm the environment. I feel that I am part of a larger group working to protect the environment,” she said. By segregating waste it is easy to recycle and the recycling resource can be free of organic waste. This way lots of money can be saved, according to environmentalists. Abu Yahya, another resident in Dammam, from Toubaishi District, also welcomed the municipality's move. “Now the general public can contribute to the safety of the earth we live in. A small step like this can make a world of difference in the long run to the environment. It is now easy for us to segregate the waste and throw them in separate bins for recycling. I suggest that this should be placed close to the usual waste bins where we throw away our organic waste.” Abu Yahya also suggested that think there should be a separate bin for e-waste because “it is very harmful for the environment.”
