ASIR/RIYADH: Head of the Traffic Department in Asir Hansh Al-Shehri has said that the Saher traffic camera system will be introduced into the region of Asir following the end of the Eid Al-Adha holidays. “The cameras will be operating in Abha, Khamis Mushayt and Ahad Rufaidah, and we hope it will result in a decrease in motor accidents,” Al-Shehri said. He urged motorists to “comply with the law”. “They should not put their own lives and the lives of others at risk,” he said. “No leniency will be shown to offenders in the full application of the law.” The head of the Road Security Special Forces, meanwhile, has said that deaths from motor accidents on major highways in Riyadh have fallen by 52 percent since the introduction of Saher cameras in April this year. Khaled Al-Qahtani said that between mid-September and last Sunday, 85 accidents were recorded on the highways to the Hijaz, Al-Kharj, the Eastern Province and Qassim. In the same period last year, 106 accidents occurred. “Injuries resulting from accidents fell by two percent, from 66 last year to 63 this year,” Al-Qahtani said. “All these figures prove that Saher is being successful in cutting accidents and their consequences, and in raising road user awareness.” Al-Qahtani said that excessive speed continued to be a major cause of accidents. “If drivers kept to legal speed limits it would help avoid a lot of other causes, such as those related to the condition of vehicles and roads,” he said.
