Ahmed Mehelmi of Egypt, one of the top sides in Jeddah, beat Reda Galou of France in an exhibition match played at the opening ceremony of 2008 AFTPA Team Tennis Tournament at Albilad Hotel here recently. More than 60 teams are taking part in the tournament, which is being organized by the All Filipino Tennis Players Association (AFTPA) and sponsored by Western Union. The highlights of this year's event is the addition of a ladies division along with a doubles tournament for those over 50 years of age. This year's tournament coincides with the 110th Philippines Independence day celebration. The opening ceremony was graced by the Philippines Consul General, Izzedin Tago, who was the guest speaker on the occasion and also took oath from the new AFTPA officer-bearers headed by Baltazar Dela Cruz as Chairman; Gerry Nazaire, Vice Chairman; Elmer Sto Domingo, Treasurer; Frederick Garces, Secretary; Fred Cristino, Auditor; Rogelio Cornejo, P.R.O.; Serge Taga, Tournament Director; and Reginaldo Sanosa, Tournament Referee. The event began with a parade of all the participating clubs and teams with their muses and mascots. The Best Muse award was picked up by Ms. Nathalie Bartolome of JIS Club. Special awards were also awarded to Best Mascot and Best in Uniform. A few gift items were also distributed among the participating teams courtesy of Nivea. This two-month long tournament is sponsored by Western Union, Farouk Trading “Lacoste”, NCB, Nivea, Al-Foadia Garments, Albilad Hotel and The Filipino Channel. __
