BEIRUT: Saudi film director Ahd Kamil has won the Golden Aleph award for Middle Eastern Best Short Film at the 2010 Beirut International Film Festival for her work “The Shoemaker”. The Silver Aleph in the same category was taken by another Saudi director, Abdullah Aal ‘Eyaf, for his short' “Aayesh”. The panel of judges awarded Kamil first prize for her film's “depiction of a man's painful return to the life stolen from him by by war and politics”, while ‘Eyaf's film – “Living”, in translation – was described as a “classically elegant portrayal of a marginalized elderly man who suddenly decides to change his life”.
