Madina: A nurse working at Ohud Hospital in Madina has been accused of causing first-degree burns on the feet and legs of a 2 ½-year-old girl. The hospital's administration said it conducted an investigation among doctors and nurses working in the nursery section and determined who was responsible. Medical reports showed that the nurse used excessively hot water to conduct a test and also deforming little Yara's head by removing hair to draw blood. Dr. Ali Karbouji, director of Ohud Hospital, told Okaz/Saudi Gazette that the nurse admitted that she put Yara, who was born two months premature, in the water to analyze blood gases, but it was too hot and caused the burns. Dr. Karbouji said action will be taken against the nurse after evaluating her experience and knowledge to determine if she had the appropriate qualifications and training. Legal action could be taken against her, he said. “If the evaluation shows that she lacks the experience to deal with such a case, she will be expelled from the section and transferred to another one in the same hospital,” he said. “We will strictly preserve the family's right.” Dr. Issa Sultan, head of the nursery department, said the nurse shaved Yara's hair to take a blood sample from a vein in her head. He added that the newborn suffered from a high fever that required the analysis of her blood platelets to diagnose her illness and prescribe treatment. Yara, who has been receiving treatment in the hospital for 30 months, weighed 600 grams when she was born and suffers from complete paralysis, he added.
