Border Guard authorities in the Jizan town of Al-Mahdaf foiled an attempt on Wednesday to smuggle into the Kingdom 86 blocks of hashish after the suspicions of a security patrol were raised by the movement of a group of persons along the southern borderline. Officials said that officers were fired upon as they approached the group, obliging them to return fire, an exchange which resulted in injury to one official. The smugglers managed to flee during the confrontation, but abandoned their contraband materials at the scene. Samta Hospital, to which the injured officer was taken, said that his condition was stable.
