The Kingdom's Alzheimer's Society will celebrate its international day with a number of activities in Makkah and Jeddah on Sept. 21. The activities include medical symposiums attended by brain and neurological experts. Abdullah Fadak, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Alzheimer's Society, said a social drama will be held at the Al-Kawakab Theatre in Jeddah to demonstrate how to deal with patients, particularly the elderly. He said most of the organizers of the events are volunteers who are giving their time to create awareness about the disease. Nessrine Al-Edrissi, the Secretary General of the society, said that one of the most important rights of Alzheimer's patients is that they should be cared for. She said that her organization provides training for families of patients on how to tackle the patients and provide the necessary medical care. The society is currently working to provide a special health club for Alzheimer's patients in Makkah province. Plans are also underway to conduct studies and compile statistics on patients in the Kingdom. According to the website alz.org, Alzheimer's disease is a brain disorder named after German physician Alois Alzheimer, who first described it in 1906.
