Defending champion Spain is in the round of 16 at the basketball world championship and so, more surprisingly, is Angola. Angola made the last 16 four years ago, but it began this year's tournament with a 50-point loss to Serbia. It kept improving, however, and on Wednesday rallied from a 10-point deficit late in the game to stun Germany 92-88 in overtime. Coach Luis Magalhaes says his players “made history” for Angola. Spain came into the tournament as the reigning world and European champion and Olympic silver medalist. It lost two of its first three games and only made sure of advancing by defeating Lebanon 91-57. Marc Gasol led Spain with 25 points and Fran Vasquez added 15. Angola stuns Germany at basketball worlds Eds: Adds Angola's record. Olimpio Cipriano scored 30 points as Angola rallied to stun Germany. Joaquim Gomes added 16 points and 14 rebounds for Angola (2-2) and Miguel Lutonda had 13. Jan Jagla led Germany with 23. Jagla's 3-pointer made it 74-64 to Germany with 3:56 minutes left on the clock. But Angola wasn't finished. Gomes sank a 3-pointer to put Angola within six, Felizardo Ambrosio stole the ball for a dunk and after both teams wasted their next two possessions, Ambrosio made another 3 to make it a one-point game. Heiko Schaffartzik made one free throw but Cipriano sank both to send the game into overtime. In overtime, Schaffartzik's 3-pointer got Germany within three with seconds remaining, but Ambrosio then made both free throws to secure the win. Ambrosio finished with nine points and seven rebounds. Germany's only win before Thursday's final game against Jordan had come against Serbia. Serbia, Argentina, Australia and Angola will advance from Group A. Serbia and Argentina will decide the pool winner Thursday. Jonas Maciulis had 19 points and Linas Kleiza added 15 points as Lithuania beat France 69-55 to clinch top spot in Group D. Nicholas Batum scored nine points in the first quarter as France jumped out to a 24-11 lead with an 11-0 run. France plays New Zealand (2-2) Thursday. After being stretched by Brazil Monday, the United States found the going much easier against Iran running out victors 88-51. As expected the Americans had few problems in overcoming Iran who have had just one win at the tournament to date. Iran did not help its cause with poor shooting, landing just three three-pointers for the game. By half-time Iran had fallen further in arrears with its rivals doing it easy, ahead 41-28 at the break. Kevin Durant was the best of the Americans in the first half with 11 points. Tyson Chandler was doing the work defensively, pulling down six rebounds. For Iran Arsalan Kazemi was the main contributor with nine points, playing every minute of the first half.
