A salesman's nervousness led inspectors to confiscate more than 20,000 packs of adulterated coffee Tuesday and seal off a coffee factory in Al-Nozah District in north Jeddah. Inspectors from Jeddah Mayoralty uncovered the malpractice during an ordinary tour of the vegetable and fruit market in north Jeddah after they noticed that the salesman, who was promoting the coffee in a grocery store, changed his facial expression and voice tone when they approached him. The suspicion of the inspectors led them to inspect the coffee and found it be impure. When the team interrogated the man, he admitted that he used a fake label and marketed the coffee to shops selling coffee powder and beans. The man led inspectors to the factory where the coffee was being made and they seized the entire consignment of more than 20,000 packages and a machine used in packing them. Dr. Bashir Abu Najm, Director of the Licenses and Commercial Control at the Jeddah Mayoralty, said the administration usually increases the number of inspections in Ramadan, when there is a tremendous increase in the demand for food, to tighten control on markets and foil attempts to deceive consumers.
