Russian fourth seed Elena Dementieva led a host of seeds into the quarterfinals of the WTA and ATP New Haven Hardcourt Tournament Wednesday with a tough three-set triumph. Dementieva outlasted Ukraine's Kateryna Bondarenko 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (5-7), 6-4 in the final tuneup event before Monday's start of the US Open in New York, building match fitness after tearing a left calf muscle in the French Open. Next up for Dementieva will be French sixth seed Marion Bartoli, who ousted Australian Anastasia Rodionova 6-3, 6-1. Italian seventh seed Flavia Pennetta eliminated Belarussian Olga Govortsova 6-3, 6-2 and will face the winner of a later match between Danish top seed Caroline Wozniacki, the US Open top seed, and Slovakian lucky loser Dominika Cibulkova. Russian eighth seed Nadia Petrova also advanced, defeating American Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-3, 6-2 to book a date with Aussie second seed Samantha Stosur. On the men's side, three rain-halted second-round matches were completed but the winners were looking at having to win twice in one day to reach the final eight. The only seed in the group, Ukraine's seventh-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov, downed American James Blake 6-4, 6-2. Kazakh fifth seed Andrey Golubev was ousted in the third round, falling to Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (9/7). Australia's Samantha Stosur needed three sets and a tiebreaker to beat Sara Errani of Italy 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (4) Tuesday. The second-seeded woman cruised through the first set, but was broken twice in the second. Errani was serving for the match, up 5-4 and 40-15 in the third, before Stosur rallied, saving four match points. Stosur said she was a little nervous about how it would hold up under match conditions. In the men's draw, top-seeded Marcos Baghdatis fought through strong winds and a half hour of rain delays for a 6-2, 6-4 win over Igor Andreev in his opening match. The Cypriot, who made it to the semifinals last week in Cincinnati and the finals earlier this month in Washington said he's playing some of his best tennis heading into next week's US Open. On the grandstand court, Bartoli needed three sets to get by Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine 6-7 (4), 7-6 (2), 6-3. Bartoli said wind gusts didn't allow her to be as aggressive as she would have liked. American Donald Young fell in his second-round match to Argentinian Juan Ignacio Chela, 5-7, 6-4 6-0. Roddick for Brisbane Former world No. 1 Andy Roddick will defend his title at Australia's Brisbane International tennis tournament in January, officials said Wednesday. Roddick, currently ranked ninth in the world, said he would use the event to prepare for the 2011 Australian Open, after reaching the quarterfinals there this year.
