During the first week of Ramadan, Ministry of Commerce and Industry field teams seized and destroyed 250,250 packages of out-of-date food in the central areas of Makkah, Madina, Jeddah and Taif, the ministry said. The organization's plan for the Umrah season during Ramadan focuses on a number of major targets including deployment of teams to ensure there is enough food available in Makkah and Madina regions, especially items in high demand during the season, and making sure merchants are selling food that is safe to eat. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry is also monitoring shops selling jewelry, gemstones and precious metals to ensure that the scales are accurate, prices are not excessive and jewelry designs do not violate the customs, traditions and teachings of Islam. The plan also includes monitoring fuel stations and calibrating fuel pumps and monitoring shops that sell and change tires. Inspections are following procedures the Ministry of Commerce and Industry established that require its supervisors to conduct inspection tours in Makkah, Madina, Taif and Jeddah.
