Roger Federer defeated Michael Llodra 7-6 (7/2), 6-3 at the Toronto Masters Thursday to set up a re-match with Tomas Berdych, who upset him in the Wimbledon quarterfinals.
The victory propelled Federer into a quarter-final against seventh-seeded Berdych, who defeated Alexander Dolgopolov of the Ukraine 6-3, 6-7 (5/7), 6-4.
Argentinian David Nalbandian upset two-time Roland Garros finalist and fifth seed Robin Soderling 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Frenchman Jeremy Chardy scored an upset over Russian sixth seed Nikolay Davydenko 6-3, 6-2.
Top-ranked Rafael Nadal survived a marathon first-set tiebreakier before he was finally able to shake off Swiss challenger Stanislas Wawrinka with a 7-6 (12), 6-3 .
Defending champion Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic had less trouble advancing.
Second-seeded Djokovic had a 7-5, 7-5 win over France's Julien Benneteau and Murray beat Belgium's Xavier Malisse 7-5, 6-2.
In other second-round matches, Nikolay Davydenko had a 7-5, 6-1 win over Italian Fabio Fognini, while Jeremy Chardy of France had an upset 6-7 (7), 7-6 (5), 6-2 win over ninth-seeded Fernando Verdasco.
Ukraine's Alexandr Dolgopolov ousted Mikhail Youzhny 1-6, 7-6 (4), 7-5 and Frenchman Michael Llodra beat No. 14 Nicolas Almagro of Spain 7-6 (5), 6-2.
Jankovic, Wozniacki fall
Top-seed Jelena Jankovic and second seed Caroline Wozniacki suffered surprise third-round exits in the Cincinnati Open Thursday.
Serbian Jankovic lost to Akgul Amanmuradova 7-6, 6-4, and the Uzbeki qualifier now goes on to face another Serb, Ana Ivanovic who beat Russia's Elena Vesnina 6-0, 6-3. Dane Wozniacki bowed to France's Marion Bartoli 6-4, 6-1.
Completing a trio of upsets, Russian sixth-seed Vera Zvonareva went out in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3 to Italian Flavia Pennetta.
Eighth-seeded Na Li of China also suffered a premature departure, losing to Belgian Yanina Wickmayer 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 in an exciting three-set encounter.
US Open champion Kim Clijsters beat former No. 1-ranked Dinara Safina 7-5, 6-2 right after Maria Sharapova advanced 6-3, 6-1 over Andrea Petkovic Wednesday.
Sixth-seeded Vera Zvonareva overcame Maria Kirilenko 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (3).
Third-seeded Elena Dementieva became the highest seed to be eliminated from the tournament when she was upset by 25th-ranked Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-1, 5-3 in another matchup of Russians.
Pavlyuchenkova is scheduled to meet Shahar Peer, who moved on with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Nuria Llagostera Vives.
Second-seeded Caroline Wozniacki needed just 51 minutes to advance with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Sybille Bammer.
Seventh-seeded Agnieska Radwanska advanced almost as easily, romping over Alisa Kleybanova, 6-4, 6-1. Christina McHale had a 6-2, 6-4 win over Ayumi Morita to set up a third-round match with Clijsters.
Francesca Schiavone was upset by Elena Vesnina 6-4, 6-4.
No. 12 Yanina Wickmayer and eighth-seeded Na Li both advanced to face off in the third round. The 11th-ranked Li cruised past No. 36 Sara Errani 6-2, 6-2. Wickmayer beat No. 46 Gisela Dulko 7-6 (3), 6-2.
Pennetta routed Monica Niculescu 6-0, 6-1, while Ivanovic advanced with a 6-1, 7-5 upset of Yaroslava Shvedova.
