The Jeddah Mayoralty has a plan to have tighter control over stalls and illegal street vendors during Ramadan. Muhammad Shutwan Asiri, head of Al-Balad Municipality, said the plan is to intensify inspections of the 310 stalls which will operate downtown during Ramadan. This is to ensure that stall owners abide by the strict conditions set by the mayoralty. He said the plan also targets illegal street vendors who pose a threat to the health of consumers. Inspectors will confiscate their goods. He said the inspectors will distribute the items fit for human consumption to charitable societies and will destroy the contaminated goods. Asiri urged the public to cooperate fully with the inspectors since the majority of these vendors are illegal residents. He said the licensed owners of the stalls have met all the requirements of the mayoralty. The conditions stipulate that the stall owners be under 30 years of age and that the stalls should be erected permanently throughout the holy month.
