up Tomas Berdych lost in three sets to unseeded Xavier Malisse in the Legg Mason Tennis Classic quarterfinals Friday, adding to the string of upsets at the hard-court tournament. Belgium's Malisse beat the No. 1-seeded Berdych 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. Malisse knocked off No. 5-seeded John Isner 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5) in the third round Thursday, when the surprises also included No. 2-seeded Andy Roddick's straight-set loss to Gilles Simon of France (6-3, 6-3). The 62nd-ranked Malisse reached his second semifinal of the year and will face eighth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis, the 2006 Australian Open finalist who eliminated third-seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain 7-6 (3), 6-4. Once a member of the top 20, and a 2002 semifinalist at Wimbledon, Malisse is now ranked 62nd and hasn't won a title or even played in a tour final since 2007. With Americans Roddick, Isner, Mardy Fish and Ryan Sweeting all losing Thursday, this is the first time no US players reached the quarterfinals at Washington's tournament, which dates to 1969. And because Roddick will drop from No. 9 to no better than No. 12 on Monday, no US man will be in the world top 10 for the first time since the computer rankings began in 1973. The Czech Republic's Berdych is a career-best No. 8, thanks to a breakout season at the Grand Slam tournaments. But Friday's loss means he will remain without a singles title of any sort in 2010. He reached his first major semifinal at the French Open in early June, and the next month, he upset Roger Federer in the Wimbledon quarterfinals on the way to his first appearance in a Grand Slam final. After losing to Rafael Nadal, Berdych took a break, deciding not to enter any tournaments until Washington, a tuneup for the US Open. On Thursday, Berdych struggled into the quarterfinals by outlasting Kazakhstan's Andrey Golubev 6-3, 5-7, 7-5, in a rematch of their first-round match at Wimbledon. In other matches, Verdasco and former world No. 3 David Nalbandian of Argentina also reached the last eight. Nalbandian ripped Swiss Marco Chiudinelli 6-1, 6-0 and Verdasco defeated US qualifier Ryan Sweeting 6-4, 7-5. Baghdatis beat Ukraine's Illya Marchenko 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3. Vandeweghe upsets Zvonareva American teenager Coco Vandeweghe upset Wimbledon finalist Vera Zvonareva of Russia 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 in the second round of the Mercury Insurance Open Thursday. Vandeweghe, ranked No. 205, rebounded from a terrible start to surprise Zvonareva, the world's No. 9 ranked player. Vandeweghe moved into the quarterfinals against Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia, who topped Italy's Sara Errani 6-1, 5-7 (5), 7-5. Flavia Pennetta of Italy advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 7-6 (5) win over Russia's Maria Kirilenko. In another match, Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova defeated Zheng Jie of China 6-2, 6-1. Wozniacki in semifinals Top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki gave another scare to the hometown fans before pulling out a 3-6, 6-0, 7-6 (3) win over Julia Goerges of Germany in the Danish Open quarterfinals Friday. Wozniacki moved on to meet the resurging Anna Chakvetadze of Russia, who beat sixth-seeded Polona Hercog from Slovenia 6-4, 6-3. Chakvetadze topped Hercog for the second time in two weeks, repeating her win in Portoroz where the Russian won her first title in two years. Second-seeded Li Na of China swept past eighth-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany 6-1, 6-2. Kerber won only 11 points on her own serve. Li faces seventh-seeded Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic, who reached her first semifinals of the year by beating Sorana Cirstea of Romania 6-1, 7
