Jeddah police Wednesday detained a couple and others who are suspected of being involved in the death of the couple's Asian maid who was found dead at their home, authorities said. The couple was detained at their home in Safa District after investigators found bruises and scratches on the body, which led them to assume the woman had been assaulted, according to authorities, who added that an investigation was under way. First Lt. Nawaf Al-Bouq, acting Jeddah Police spokesman, said security authorities have detained other people who are thought to be involved. He said the security authorities, who are awaiting the forensic report, could not determine conclusively that a crime had been committed, but investigations will soon uncover the facts. Teams of Al-Safa policemen and forensic and criminal evidence investigators rushed to the scene after the woman's employer found her body and a preliminary investigation, led by Col. Hamoud Al-Jraisy, head of the Al-Safa Police Station Investigation Department, showed that there was a light bruise on the maid's body. When investigators interrogated the wife, she said the woman suffered from psychological problems and sometimes hit her head against the wall, and that the entire family used to calm her down. The husband told investigators he had no idea about the circumstances of the maid's death. Investigators doubted the wife's testimony because they found other bruises on the maid's body, which led them to suspect the woman was exposed to violence and to detain the couple for further investigations.
