Anderlecht, Hapoel reach Champions League playoffs
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 04 - 08 - 2010

Anderlecht and Hapoel Tel Aviv reached the playoffs for the Champions League group stage with comfortable wins Tuesday.
Hapoel Tel Aviv scored three times in the first 35 minutes to beat Aktobe 3-1 and advance past the Kazakh champion 3-2 on aggregate. Eran Zehavi, Ben Sahar and an own-goal by Khalifa Elhadj Ba put the Israeli side in control before Murat Tleshev scored a last-minute goal for Aktobe.
Anderlecht defeated The New Saints 3-0. Seventeen-year-old striker Romelu Lukaku scored twice in six minutes after coming on as a second-half substitute to lead the Belgian club to a 6-1 aggregate win.
Lukaku had been linked with a move away from Anderlecht following his breakthrough season but instead has extended his stay with the Belgian champion.
The pair will be in Friday's playoff draw, along with several highly ranked sides and the winners of Wednesday's 13 matches.
Rapid Vienna beat Beroe Stara Zagora 3-1 to advance 4-1 in the second-tier Europa League.
Nikica Jelavic scored a fifth-minute header and a 20-meter shot in the 60th before Markus Katzer made it 3-0 in the 71st with a shot from a tight left-wing angle.
Bayern angry
Angry Bayern Munich accused the Netherlands of allowing Arjen Robben to play at the World Cup with an injury after announcing the striker would miss the first two months of the Bundesliga season Tuesday.
Bayern said on its website (www.fcbayern.t-home.de) that a routine pre-season exam had shown that Robben had a torn muscle in his left thigh, adding he had suffered the injury shortly before the World Cup.
The 26-year-old missed the his team's first two group matches at the World Cup, but then played in the remaining five and helped the Dutch reach the final where it lost 1-0 to Spain after extra-time.
“This is a severe injury,” club doctor Hans-Wilhelm Mueller-Wohlfahrt told the club's website (www.fcbayern.t-home.de).
“I find it irresponsible that this injury has not been precisely diagnosed and that they have let Arjen play.
“For my part, I offered to help with the diagnosis but this was not taken into account.”
The Bundesliga club had initially issued an even more strongly-worded statement but quickly replaced it with a toned-down version.
Robben, who scored two goals at the World Cup but missed a superb chance to put the Dutch ahead in the final, was quoted as saying: “It's a shock for me to get a diagnosis like this on my return.
“I'm very disappointed, this absence is bitter for me and for the team.”
Club president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge was also upset.
“Naturally, Bayern Munich is angry,” he said. “Once again, we as a club must pay the bill after a player has been severely injured with his national team.”
The club said it would take the matter up with the Dutch federation.
UEFA fines AIK
Swedish club AIK has been fined for its fans' violent behavior during a Champions League qualifying round loss at home against Norway's Rosenborg.
UEFA ordered AIK Tuesday to pay ¤15,000 ($19,850) for “crowd disturbances, throwing of missiles and the improper conduct of supporters toward Rosenborg fans and Swedish police.”
Rosenborg won the third qualifying round, first-leg match 1-0 at Rasunda stadium in Stockholm last Wednesday. The return match is played Wednesday to decide which team advances to the playoff round.
