illiteracy-program contractual teachers who were sacked by the Ministry of Education recently have lodged a complaint with the National Society for Human Rights (NSHR). Dr. Ahmad Al-Bahkali, the NSHR branch's director here, said the society's legal consultant has studied the case and approached the ministry to ascertain the reasons for canceling their contracts. The ministry's decision “was due to the poor performance of some of them and to the fact some schools have no need for their services,” said Al-Bahkali. However, Al-Bahkali called on the ministry to reconsider the decision. In their complaint, the teachers alleged that they were dismissed without prior warning. They also noted that the cancellation of their contracts has put them in “financial dilemmas” and caused them “problems in their social lives”. Some of the sacked teachers had 10-year-old contracts as such the cancellation is in violation of the regulations, they added.
