Australia equaled the biggest winning margin in Champions Trophy field hockey history when it routed New Zealand 9-1 to begin its bid for a third straight title Saturday. Australia beat France by the same scoreline in 1992. Luke Doerner, Jason Wilson and Russell Ford scored twice each, and Jamie Dwyer, Simon Orchard and Glenn Turner also got on the scoresheet for Australia. Nicholas Wilson scored New Zealand's first tournament goal since 2004, but the Black Sticks' heaviest defeat in Trophy history also extended their record for the longest winless streak to 18 matches since 1983. The Netherlands enjoyed a 5-2 tournament-opening win over Spain for a third successive year. Olympic champion Germany beat England 4-2, running ahead 4-0 through Oskar Deecke, Jan-Marco Montag, Martin Haner and Benjamin Weiss before Ashley Jackson scored twice for England.
