Police in Jeddah are investigating an Indonesian woman living in the Kingdom illegally and a man of the same nationality found living together with someone else's infant child. The discovery was made in the Al-Jami'a District of the city on Tuesday during police raids on numerous sites believed to be sheltering persons living in breach of the country's residency and labor laws. Police said that after entering the house and questioning the two occupants over their residency status officers noticed in a separate room movement under a pile of clothes. When the baby girl was found beneath, both the man and the woman claimed to have no knowledge of her. Further questioning led to the woman saying that the infant, described as “Arab in appearance”, had been left in her care shortly after birth by an Arab woman who paid her 300 riyals a month and said she did not want anyone to know about the baby. The Indonesian woman told investigators that she didn't know she was breaking any laws. “We are exploring all possible scenarios, including that the baby was kidnapped or is missing,” said police spokesman Nawaaf Al-Bouq. “We have alerted all police stations and asked them to inform us of any missing child reports matching the descriptions we have given. Our records show no reports of kidnappings or disappearances involving such a young child.”
