Police have accused the father of three-year-old Rawan of staging her kidnap and fabricating ransom demands from his former Indonesian housemaid “out of revenge”. Rawan was reported missing while in the company of an Indonesian housemaid at the weekend, prompting police searches across the city which located her on Sunday at the home of another Indonesian woman in Al-Mushrifa District. Subsequent inquiries revealed that the father was aware of his daughter's whereabouts and that he had, in fact, paid the woman to care for the child. He later admitted to police that he had staged the kidnap out of revenge against his housemaid for leaving his service. The woman found with Rawan said the child was passed into her care after the former housemaid, who had worked for Rawan's family for three months, expressed her wish to take up employment elsewhere. Reservations concerning the veracity of the case were expressed by police shortly after Rawan was found on Sunday. “There are a few details that don't match up, and for reasons of sensitivity the particular circumstances of the case will not be revealed until investigations are complete,” a police spokesman said at the time. It was later revealed that police had observed inconsistencies in the father's statements concerning his knowledge of the housemaid's home address, and suspicions were also raised by both his calmness when reporting the alleged kidnapping and his behavior when his daughter was found. He now faces charges of making a false report, deception, and wasting police time.
