Everton lost ground in the race for a Champions League place as Brian McBride's header gave struggling Fulham a crucial 1-0 win at Craven Cottage on Sunday.
McBride's first goal since August had a significant impact at both ends of the Premier League table. It secured only a second win in 18 league matches for Roy Hodgson's side and moved them to within three points of safety.
Everton left bemoaning a lackluster display that could cost it a top four finish. After Liverpool's win against Reading on Saturday, David Moyes's team is now three points behind its fourth-placed Merseyside rival following its first league defeat of 2008.
On Saturday champion Manchester United went back to the top of the Premier League on Saturday after it won 1-0 at Derby County and Arsenal was held to a 1-1 draw by Middlesbrough at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal looked set for a rare home defeat until Kolo Toure's header went in off defender Matthew Taylor and goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer four minutes from time. Former Arsenal forward Jeremie Aliadiere marked his return from a four-match ban by scoring against his old club after 25 minutes with a volley into the roof of Manuel Almunia's net.
It was Arsenal's fourth successive draw in the league and allowed United to move above it on goal difference.
United has 67 points from 29 matches, Arsenal has 67 from 30 while Chelsea kept the pressure on the top two with a 1-0 win at Sunderland. It has 64 points from 29 matches and faces Arsenal at Stamford Bridge next weekend.
Cristiano Ronaldo was United's hero at Pride Park, scoring with just 14 minutes to go as Derby, bottom of the table with only one league win all season and beaten 6-1 at Chelsea on Wednesday, offered far tougher resistance than United expected.
Ben Foster, making his debut in the United goal, had a busy afternoon and made a brilliant save from Kenny Miller to deny Derby the lead. United finally broke through when Wayne Rooney passed for Ronaldo who sidefooted home past former United keeper Roy Carroll for his 31st goal of the season.
Fourth-placed Liverpool came from behind to beat Reading 2-1 at Anfield with goals from Javier Mascherano, his first for the club, and Fernando Torres, his 20th in the league this season.
Portsmouth moved above Aston Villa into sixth place after beating it 2-0 at Fratton Park, while West Ham United came from behind to beat Blackburn Rovers 2-1 at Upton Park.
West Ham ended a run of three straight 4-0 defeats with their victory. Teenage substitute Freddie Sears headed the winner in the closing stages on his debut.
Keita helps Lyon win
In Paris, Ivory Coast winger Abdulkader Keita scored two first-half goals Saturday and striker Fred added another to lead Lyon over Monaco 3-0 in the French league.
The victory moved Lyon closer to a seventh straight title with 61 points, nine ahead of second-place Bordeaux, which can close back within six against Strasbourg at home on Sunday. Nine rounds will remain after this week.
Nancy consolidated its hold on third place by drawing 1-1 at Sochaux.
In other matches, it was: Le Mans 1, Rennes 1; Lille 5, Caen 0; Lorient 1, Auxerre 1; Metz 1, Nice 2; Paris Saint-Germain 1, Valenciennes 1, and Saint-Etienne 0, Toulouse 0.Roma rallies to win
In Rome, Ludovic Giuly and Mirko Vucinic came off the bench to score second-half goals and rally AS Roma to a 2-1 victory over AC Milan Saturday.
The victory gave Roma 61 points and moved it within three of first-place Inter Milan, which plays Palermo on Sunday.
Giuly scored in the 78th minute, knocking in the ball with his shin as he fell backward in the area. Three minutes later Vucinic sealed the comeback with a low shot that beat Milan goalkeeper Zeljko Kalac.
Kaka had put Milan ahead in the 56th.
In Saturday's other game, Antonio Di Natale scored his 13th goal in the Serie A this season to enabled Udinese to draw 2
