Restaurants and cafeterias in the region have been banned from selling shawarma – a chicken or meat kebab-type takeaway sandwich – after registering numerous cases of poor hygienic conditions and food poisoning. “This is to protect the health of the consumer during the summer period which has brought unusually high temperatures,” said Abdullah Al-Arfaj, Deputy Mayor for Services in Al-Ahsa. “Health officials have stepped up their inspections, and the mayoralty has increased its campaigns to monitor any outlets that have a bearing on public health to prevent food poisoning and violations on the part of staff to comply with health regulations in the preparation and distribution of food products.”
