The fourth annual student art show, held at the International Programs School (IPS), Al-Khobar, displayed the artistic talent of middle and high school students who raised SR4,850 by exhibiting and auctioning off their artwork. The exhibition offered a rare glimpse into the work of young artists whose paintings spoke of their love of life, of color and of the different shades of white and grey that make life itself a painting of sorts. The exhibition showcased works from various schools of painting, most notably the abstract form, cubism and mosaic masterpieces. There were pencil drawings, sketches and paintings inspired by artists, such as, Georgia O'Keeffe, and hovering around proudly were the artists themselves - girls and boys who spoke passionately of their art. Amin Rashidi, the ninth grade student in charge of the auction, explained what painting meant to him. “It is something which makes my life enriched and meaningful. It is through painting that I express myself in ways I could not in any other art form. Words can fall short, but any emotions or feelings that I have can come to life with colors,” he said. And indeed, emotions did come to life at the exhibition with every painting having a different story to tell, an enriching narrative to speak. A very prominent painting, the ‘Color of Life', a collective work by ninth graders inspired by the American artist Georgia O'Keeffe, was sold early in the evening to a proud parent, while a mosaic created by tenth grade students was sold for SR2,000. Suzan Hammoudah, the art and design teacher responsible for the students' artistic expertise, was justifiably proud. “Our art studies are the strongest in the eastern region and maybe in the Kingdom,” she said. “We give our students a thorough background in art history, schools of art, famous artists, and basic and advanced skills in using all types of art materials. For example, we have beautiful designs made by our students from mosaic pieces that were brought from Egypt.” The school management does not spare any cost or effort in providing the best for the students' education. The school offers art as an elective subject at the higher grades. “This year some of my students have been accepted at major universities in North America and Europe with full scholarships,” said Hammoudah. The exhibition spoke volumes about the students' passion for painting and their ability to use concepts in expressing their feelings in their artwork. Fariha Chowdhry, one of the artists of the mosaic on display, said, “Painting is my hobby. I like to paint to express myself and as a means of relaxation and peace.” Mashlee Jasim was another one of those who enthusiastically described her artwork and how painting is a passion for her. But Amin Rashidi, the most vocal about his love for painting, summed it up perfectly, “Art is important in every form. For some it is painting, for some it is music, for some words. It builds character and makes life worthwhile.” __
