Speed limit signs will be posted on all streets here by Aug. 1 in preparation for the introduction of the Saher traffic system, Jeddah Mayor Adel Fakeih told Saudi Gazette. The new traffic system, already in force in Riyadh, will be introduced to Jeddah next month, according to Colonel Zaid Aal Hashim, head of public relations for Jeddah Traffic Police. He additionally confirmed that Traffic Police will not apply the Saher system in Jeddah without proper speed limit signs being posted on all streets. He said that there is cooperation between his department and the municipality to post signs informing motorists of the speed limit on each street. The colonel said that the new Saher system has resulted in a dramatic decrease in the number of traffic violations in Riyadh. “All those who refuse to comply with the system are violators,” he said. “We have been following discussions on the Internet, and it is sad that there are still some people who do not accept the implementation of a system which is only meant for their safety. Also, what some people are saying about being able to trick the cameras by spraying something on a car's license plates to hide the numbers is not true. There is no way to escape from the cameras,” he said.
