Braves thrash Nationals and Strasburg 5-0
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 30 - 06 - 2010

The Atlanta Braves broke through for four runs in the seventh against the Washington Nationals' star rookie Stephen Strasburg's on their way to a 5-0 victory Monday.
Strasburg (2-2) had no help from his offense as he gave up six hits and four runs, three earned, in 6 1-3 innings. The Nationals have scored one run in Strasburg's last three starts.
His previous high for runs allowed was two in his debut, a 5-2 win over Pittsburgh on June 8.
He struck out seven, leaving him two shy of Herb Score's record of 50 in his first five starts. Strasburg has two losses and a no-decision after winning his first two starts.
Hudson (8-3) gave up five hits for the NL East-leading Braves, who drew 42,889, their second-largest crowd of the season.
Rockies 10, Padres 6: At San Diego, Ubaldo Jimenez held San Diego hitless into the sixth inning and Miguel Olivo, Carlos Gonzalez and Ryan Spilborghs each hit a two-run homer as Colorado beat San Diego.
Seth Smith added a solo homer for the Rockies, who have won five of seven.
Jimenez (14-1), the major league wins leader who threw a no-hitter April 17 at Atlanta, lost his bid for another no-no in the sixth when he allowed four runs on four hits, including Scott Hairston's three-run homer off the facade of the second deck in left field.
The right-hander won his eighth straight decision, tying Jeff Francis' team record set in 2007. His ERA rose from 1.60 to 1.83, tying him with Florida's Josh Johnson for best in the big leagues.
Olivo also hit a two-run double off Kevin Correia (5-6) and finished a triple shy of the cycle.
Dodgers 4, Giants 2: At San Francisco, Casey Blake hit a go-ahead homer in the eighth inning and Manny Ramirez had an RBI double among his three hits as Los Angeles edged San Francisco.
Blake connected for his eighth home run with a two-run drive off Santiago Casilla (1-2) and the Dodgers matched a Los Angeles record with five double plays on the way to their fourth victory in 11 games.
Jeff Weaver (5-1) pitched a scoreless seventh in relief of Chad Billingsley, working out of a jam with runners on first and third and no outs.
Hong-Chih Kuo filled in as closer, escaping trouble for his second save. Juan Uribe drew a one-out walk and Aaron Rowand singled to put runners on the corners. Buster Posey struck out and Edgar Renteria flied out to end it.
Marlins 10, Mets 3: At San Juan, Puerto Rico, Cody Ross homered and had three hits, Ricky Nolasco pitched seven solid innings as Florida beat New York to give interim manager Edwin Rodriguez a sweet homecoming in Puerto Rico.
Chris Coghlan and Mike Stanton also homered for the Marlins, who handed knuckleballer R.A. Dickey (6-1) his first loss in eight major league starts this season.
Back in March, Major League Baseball moved this series from Miami, where the Marlins draw sparse crowds, to Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan.
Rodriguez, who was managing Florida's top farm team a week ago, took over the big club when Fredi Gonzalez was fired Wednesday, becoming the first major league manager born in Puerto Rico. Days later, he got a chance to come home with his new squad - and what a homecoming it was.
Rodriguez lives about five minutes from the ballpark.
There were pockets of empty seats, however, in the announced crowd of 18,073.
In other games it was: Reds 7, Phillies 3; Cardinals 6, Diamondbacks 5; Pirates 2, Cubs 1; Astros 9, Brewers 5.
