The Civil Defense has closed 20 schools in the Jeddah region for failing to meet safety conditions. Jeddah Civil Defense chief Abdullah Al-Jeddawi said the closures were made with the collaboration of the regional Education Administration after “recent inspections” made by Civil Defense officials. Al-Jeddawi added that precautionary plans had been approved to tackle summer fires resulting from the high temperatures. “The number of fires seen recently is no cause for alarm, if we take into account the size and population of Jeddah,” Al-Jeddawi said. “The Civil Defense has in place a precautionary plan with safety patrols and rescue teams at the ready for fire reports from the information center.” He said that fires were expected due to “the failure by some to properly maintain electrical equipment, and some poor practices on the part of workshop staff in industrial areas”. “The high temperatures are also a factor in causing fires, as well as human error and a failure to adhere to safety standards,” Al
