Police in Jeddah have arrested a four-member gang of Pakistanis who ran a telephone scam in which over 60 persons fell victim to believing they had won cash prizes SR200,000 . The four told randomly selected responders that to collect their prizes they had merely to recharge via a pre-paid card the telephone of a number provided, a number which, once the sum had been charged, they discovered belonged to an inactive telephone. The four would later sell the number on to other telephone users. Police said they enlisted the help of communications experts and set up surveillance at centers selling pre-paid cards, and suspicions fell on one individual observed recharging telephones without having bought any cards. Under questioning the man revealed that he was part of a four-strong group that had amassed over SR10,000 through the scam.
