Ali Al-Zahrani, the head of Road Safety at the Eastern Province Traffic Department has said that the Saher traffic control system does not exempt rescue services from offenses such as speeding and jumping red lights. Addressing the region's Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Monday in a lecture detailing the nature of the system, Al-Zahrani said that Red Crescent and Civil Defense vehicles would also be fined for traffic offenses when Saher, which is already operating in Riyadh, is introduced in the Eastern Province. “The system will be operating before the beginning of Ramadan,” Al-Zahrani said. “The entire length of the Jubail Highway will be monitored by cameras, as well as parts of the Riyadh Highway and the Abu Hadriya road. Seven junctions, in Dammam, Al-Khobar and Dhahran, will also have cameras.” Al-Zahrani said that any offenses committed by vehicles purchased on installments and still in the name of the selling-company will require the company to provide the Traffic Department with the name of the purchaser in order for the fine to be directed at the offender. He further noted that authorities were coordinating with national border crossings in the Eastern Province to catch motorists from neighboring Gulf countries who have committed traffic offenses in the Kingdom.
