Windies and S. Africa settle for a draw
Proteas lead Test series 1-0
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 23 - 06 - 2010

The second Test between West Indies and South Africa ended in a tedious draw on the final day Tuesday when the tourists declared and both teams agreed there was no point continuing.
Just 12 overs of the evening session had been bowled when South Africa declared its second innings at 235 for three from 94 overs, a lead of 232.
It ensured the Proteas will go into the third and final Test, starting in Barbados Saturday, leading the series 1-0.
Jacques Kallis was not out 62 and AB de Villiers unbeaten on 31 when the game in St. Kitts was brought to a halt in front of a smattering of spectators.
Kallis faced 128 deliveries and struck half a dozen fours and one six while de Villiers hit just two boundaries in his 130-ball knock.
The pair added 104 runs for the fourth wicket to consolidate after the Windies had enjoyed a triple breakthrough before lunch.
Resuming overnight on 23 for no wicket, South Africa stumbled to 131 for three when spinner Shane Shillingford removed captain Graeme Smith for 46 and Hashim Amla for 41, and medium-pacer Dwayne Bravo deceived Alviro Petersen for 39.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul was named man of the match for his marathon 166 in the West Indies' first innings total of 546.
Chanderpaul provided the foundation for the home side's response to South Africa's 543 for six declared.
The pitch strongly favored the batsmen, with five centuries and five half-centuries recorded in the match.
In total, 1,324 runs were scored in less than three innings, while only 19 wickets were taken at an average of nearly 70.
Although the West Indies Cricket Board allowed fans in for free on the fifth and final day, only about 100 locals were in the stands.
South Africa won the first Test by 163 runs. - Reuters
