An Egyptian man has accused a hospital here of causing his brother's death from a botched appendicitis operation. Ali Al-Roubi Hussein said that he believes that his brother, 27-year-old Faraj, died because of a mistake made by the doctors who conducted the operation at the Wadi Al-Dawasir Governorate Hospital. Hussein has lodged an official complaint at the governorate, the emirate in Riyadh and the Directorate of Health Affairs in Riyadh Region. Dr. Hisham Nadirah, Director General of Health Affairs in Riyadh Region, said a committee from the ministry will move to the hospital next week to investigate the cause of death. Meanwhile, Mubarak Bin Majed Al-Shareedah, Director of Wadi Al-Dawasir Hospital, said that after the operation the expatriate slipped into a coma for three days and then died. He confirmed the hospital has received a complaint referred from the governorate and that an investigation is under way to determine the cause of the death. After referring the dossier to the forensic medicine department, the cause of the death will be determined within the next few days, he said. Hussein said his brother had complained about abdominal pain and went to Wadi Al-Dawasir General Hospital where the doctors diagnosed him with appendicitis. They gave him a solution in preparation for the operation. “Faraj telephoned me and asked me to come to the hospital. In my presence, he was taken into the operating theater and came out after two hours. But his condition deteriorated suddenly. He was brain-dead and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). He was kept on a respirator for three days and then passed away.” Hussein said that his brother enjoyed good health and was not suffering from any health problems before the operation. He claimed that his brother died because of a medical error. He appealed to the officials to determine the cause of his brother's death and take those responsible to task.
