Smith's 21st Test ton leaves WI reeling
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 19 - 06 - 2010

Captain Graeme Smith cracked his 21st Test century to put South Africa in complete control on the first day of the second Test against West Indies Friday.
The left-handed opener elected to bat after winning the toss and powered his way to 132 as the visitor, 1-0 up in the three-match series, compiled 296 for three in front of a meagre crowd.
Smith clubbed nine fours and three sixes before playing on to paceman Kemar Roach late in the day. Jacques Kallis was unbeaten on 45 at the close while AB de Villiers was seven not out.
Earlier, Alviro Petersen hit an aggressive 52 and shared an opening stand of 99 with Smith on a placid pitch that offered little to the bowlers. After Petersen fell to off-spinner Shane Shillingford, Smith combined with Hashim Amla (44) for a second-wicket partnership of 112.
Smith was dropped twice and dispatched Narsingh Deonarine's off spin for two consecutive sixes to race into the 90s. Shillingford, playing in his second Test, also dismissed Amla as he finished the day with figures of two for 91.
The South Africans are unchanged, but West Indies has included Roach for Nelon Pascal.
Hopes happy with opener
James Hopes reckons the scare Ireland gave Australia Thursday will stand the world champion in good stead when it faces England in an ODI series starting next week. “It was good to play the Irish because they are a pretty good team,” said man of the match Hopes. “We have another practice match Saturday and we know a five-match series against England is going to be different to the seven-match series we played last year when we beat them 6-1 (in England).”
However, Ashes holder England will be buoyed by last month's World Twenty20 final win over Australia and Hopes, 31, added: “They have a bit of a different team, they are coming off a Twenty20 win and they are playing in their own backyard.” – AgenciesScoreboard
