French Open champion Francesca Schiavone failed to follow up her success in Paris when the second-seeded Italian was beaten 7-5, 6-3 by Sorana Cirstea of Romania in the first round of the Eastbourne International Tuesday. Defending champion Caroline Wozniacki also bowed out, losing 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 to France's Aravane Rezai. There was an upset too in the men's event, when second-seeded Spaniard Feliciano Lopez retired after receiving treatment to his shoulder while trailing 6-3, 5-4 to British wild card entrant James Ward. The top-seeded Wozniacki was beaten by a more aggressive opponent, whose power helped her overcome the blustery conditions at the Wimbledon warmup tournament being played on grass. Fifth-seeded Kim Clijsters marked her first match on grass in nearly four years with a 6-1, 6-1 win over fellow Belgian player Yanina Wickmayer. Clijsters outplayed her 20-year-old opponent in a match that lasted just 54 minutes. On a bad day for the leading players, fourth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska was beaten 7-6 (2), 6-1 by Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, sixth-seeded Flavia Pennetta lost 7-6 (5), 6-1 to Russian qualifier Ekaterina Makarova and Nadia Petrova struggled before edging Croatian qualifier Karolina Sprem 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (4). Wozniacki failed to convert two break points to go 4-2 ahead in the first set. Rezai then broke for 5-4, when Wozniacki netted a forehand, and served out for the set. Rezai squandered three break points at the start of the second set, before Wozniacki broke for 2-0 when her opponent double-faulted. A crosscourt forehand winner then gave the Danish player a second break for 5-1 and she clinched the set to love. Rezai earned the only break of the third set at 3-2 by forcing a backhand error from Wozniacki. In the men's tournament, top-seeded Nicolas Almagro of Spain beat Lukasz Kubot of Poland 7-5, 7-6 (3) to advance. Ljubicic eliminated In the Netherlands, top seeded Ivan Ljubicic made an early exit from the Unicef Open Tuesday after losing his first match of the tournament 6-2, 7-6 (6) to Alejandro Falla. Falla will now play Xavier Malisse of Belgium, who reached the quarterfinals for a second successive week by beating Germany's Daniel Brands 4-6, 6-1, 7-5. Malisse was within two points of losing the second-round match. In first-round play, eighth-seeded Benjamim Becker of Germany, who won his first ATP title last year at Den Bosch, defeated Jarkko Nieminen of Finland 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Seventh-seeded Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia beat Jeremy Chardy of France 6-3, 6-4 for his first win on the ATP Tour since February, following injuries. In the women's draw, third-seeded Maria Kirilenko retired with an abdominal injury against Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium, who was leading 6-3, 3-3. Seventh-seed Andrea Petkovic of Germany knocked out Ana Ivanovic of Serbia 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-1, and Sandra Zahlavova of the Czech Republic defeated Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia 7-6(1), 4-6, 6-2.
