hitter into the ninth inning before pinch-hitter Juan Pierre led off with a single as the Chicago Cubs held on to beat the White Sox 1-0 Sunday. Gavin Floyd (2-7) flirted with a no-hitter of his own for the White Sox before Alfonso Soriano doubled with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Chad Tracy followed with a single, producing the game's only run. That took care of Floyd's run at history - but Lilly (2-5) was still going and the tension began to mount as he inched closer to the 14th no-hitter in franchise history. After Pierre's single, Carlos Marmol entered and the White Sox loaded the bases with one out. Paul Konerko bounced into a forceout at home and Carlos Quentin flied to center to end the game, giving Marmol his 13th save in 16 chaances. Nationals 9, Indians 4: At Cleveland, Stephen Strasburg had trouble with Cleveland's mound while lasting 5 1-3 innings during his second major league start, leading Washington to the victory. Coming off a 14-strikeout debut, Strasburg (2-0) allowed just two hits, one a home run by Travis Hafner. He struck out eight and walked five before leaving to a chorus of boos in the sixth as Washington ended Cleveland's four-game winning streak. Strasburg's appearance drew 32,876 fans, the second-largest crowd at Progressive Field this season. Adam Dunn homered off David Huff (2-8), scored three times and accidentally barreled over Cleveland's hotshot prospect, catcher Carlos Santana. Phillies 5, Red Sox 3: At Boston, Cole Hamels cooled off Boston's surging lineup with seven strong innings, helping Philadelphia salvage the finale of the weekend series. Raul Ibanez hit a two-run homer for the Phillies, who snapped a six-game road losing streak with just their eighth win in their last 24 games overall. Adrian Beltre hit his ninth homer for Boston, which plated double digits in each of the first two games of the series, winning by a combined score of 22-4. In other games it was: Angels 6, Dodgers 5; Marlins 6, Rays 1; Yankees 9, Astros 5; Giants 6, Athletics 2; Braves 7, Twins 3; Royals 7, Reds 3; Mets 11, Orioles 4; Tigers 4, Pirates 3; Rangers 7, Brewers 2; Rockies 10, Blue Jays 3; Mariners 4, Padres 2. Diamondbacks 7, Cardinals 5: At Phoenix, Chris Young rescued Arizona's much-maligned bullpen with his second homer of the game, a two-run shot in the bottom of the ninth inning that gave the Diamondbacks the win in the only National League game. Adam LaRoche doubled home two runs in the first inning and added an RBI single in the seventh for Arizona. Young hit a solo homer in the fourth.
