seeded Lleyton Hewitt beat Roger Federer for the first time in 16 matches to win the Gerry Weber Open title Sunday. The 29-year-old Australian won 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4 in his first final of 2010. Hewitt last beat Federer in 2003. Top-seeded Federer, who was chasing his sixth title in Halle, Germany, had won his previous 29 matches at the Wimbledon warmup tournament. It was Hewitt's first appearance at Germany's only grass court tournament. After cruising through the previous four rounds without dropping a single set, Federer met his match in the battle between two former world number ones. The Swiss started strongly and earned two breaks on Hewitt's first service game and appeared set to make light work of his sixth Halle final, taking the first set 6-3. But Hewitt broke early in the second set, confirming he was willing to make a fight of it. Federer broke back immediately and the game followed serve. Hewitt won the tiebreaker, converting his fourth set point to level the match and becoming the first player to take a set off Federer in Halle since 2006. The final set belonged to the Australian, who broke again in Federer's first service game and never looked back. Hewitt took his first match point with a bit of fortune as the ball clipped the top of the net to end Federer's domination in Halle. “It's fantastic,” Hewitt said. “Everybody knows how good Roger is on the grass court. His record speaks for itself and I just got lucky.” Li beats Sharapova In Birmingham, top-seeded Li Na beat Maria Sharapova 7-5, 6-1 Sunday to win the grass-court Aegon Classic and claim her first title this year. Sharapova lost to Li in the semifinals of last year's tournament in Birmingham and the Chinese player produced a repeat performance 12 months on, winning her maiden title on grass. “Last year I beat Maria in the semifinals and then was so excited I forgot I had another match,” Li said. “I'm excited again. If I had another match this time, I think I would probably lose that too.” Second-seeded Sharapova won here in 2004 - the year she won Wimbledon - and again in 2005 but could not find the form she had showed throughout the past week. Sharapova broke Li early and led 3-1 but then found it increasingly hard to land her first serves. A day after sending down a career-fastest 121mph serve in a semifinal victory over American qualifier Alison Riske, the Russian player had seven double faults. Once Li broke back for 3-3, she got on top. Sharapova saved two set points at 5-6 and then squandered a chance to force a tiebreaker when she double-faulted on game point. Li broke to win the first set and by the start of the second, Sharapova's confidence had dipped. The Russian player, who had seven double faults in total, was outmaneuvered in the baseline rallies as Li hit a number of brilliant drives from both wings to close out the victory. Querrey beats Fish Sam Querrey won an all-American final at the Queen's Club grass-court tournament, beating Mardy Fish 7-6 (3), 7-5 Sunday. It is seventh-seeded Querrey's third title of the year and all have been achieved on different surfaces - he won in Memphis on hardcourt and in Belgrade on clay.
