Robert Karlsson, bidding to become the first Swedish winner of the PGA Championship, coasted into a four-shot lead after the third round of the European Tour's flagship event on Saturday. The 1.96-meter Karlsson, one of the tallest players on the circuit, carded a two-under-par 70 for an 11-under tally of 205 on a difficult day for scoring on Wentworth's West Course. The sun shone throughout but gusting winds got stronger as the day went on. Only three players broke 70, the lowest round a 68 by Argentina's Rafa Echenique. Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez (72) and Briton Oliver Wilson (73) shared second place on 209, one ahead of overnight leader Paul McGinley who slumped to a seven-over 79 to join India's Jyoti Randhawa (69) and Daniel Vancsik (72) of Argentina on 210. Britain's Paul Casey appeared ready to mount a charge when he moved to eight-under at the 12th. But an ugly six, five, six, five finish meant he had to settle for a 73 for 212. Mickelson ahead at Colonial In Texas, former champion Phil Mickelson, with his renowned short game in sparkling order, grabbed a one-shot lead in the Colonial Invitational second round on Friday. A stroke off the pace at the start of a hot and blustery day, the American world number two needed only 25 putts to fire a two-under-par 68 at Colonial Country Club. That left him at seven-under 133, one ahead of overnight leader Johnson Wagner (71) and fellow Americans Matt Kuchar (64) and Brian Gay (65). Ammaccapane grabs lead In Corning, US veteran Dina Ammaccapane fired her second 3-under-par 69 in a row to seize a one-stroke lead Friday after the second round of the $1.5 million LPGA Corning Classic. The 39-year-old American, seeking the first title of her 18-year LPGA career, made six birdies - four in a row starting at the fifth hole - and three bogeys for the second consecutive day at the 6,223-yard Corning Country Club. American Erica Blasberg was among four players on 139, also including Americans Wendy Ward and Katie Futcher and Britain's Janice Moodie, who had the best round of the bunch Friday with a 68.
