During recent inspection tours by municipality officials here, 841 workers of different nationalities were apprehended at the central fruit and vegetable market for trading in contravention of municipal regulations. All those arrested were handed over to the Passports Department, said Dr. Nasir Bin Muhammad Jarallah, Director General of Markets and Butcheries. The inspection teams also confiscated 84 baskets of fruit, 877 baskets of vegetables, 49 bags of fodder and 352 unhygienically cleaned water bottles. Other items which were being sold illegally and confiscated were 15 plastic chairs, 19 carts, 40 weighing machines, five gas cylinders and seven large bags of watermelons, said Jarallah. Also taken into custody were 48 people involved in the adulteration of goods. More than 400 shopkeepers were found to be violating rules by selling goods harmful to human health. Jarallah said strict action will be taken against those who were involved in adulteration or selling goods without obtaining a proper license from the mayoralty. The official said foreigners found to be breaking the laws of the land would be handed over to the concerned authorities for their immediate deportation.
