Two international companies have commenced a feasibility study for an internal city train network for Makkah. Osama Al-Bar, Mayor of Makkah, said that the network would connect with the Haramain Train station at the city's western entry point in the Al-Zahireen District to transport pilgrims and visitors to the Central Zone and the Grand Mosque. “The study will also propose sites for other stations on the network in Makkah,” Al-Bar said. Work on the Haramain Train railway along Makkah-Jeddah Highway, meanwhile, is under way, along with works for a bridge connecting Bahra, Al-Harazaat and Quwaiza to the rail line extending to the main station in Jeddah's Old Airport district.
