Qatar inaugurated on Tuesday a $2.3 billion power plant as the gas-rich emirate pushes forward to export electricity to its neighbors, the energy minister said. “The total expense of the project has reached $2.3 billion and it will produce 2,000 megawatts of electricity. This is a major leap as economic progress is measured by the production of energy,” Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah said. The plant is located in the industrial city of Mesaieed, south of the capital Doha. Qatar also plans to inaugurate another plant in the northern city of Ras Qurtas in the hope of achieving enough production capacity to allow the small emirate to become an exporter. Ras Qurtas station has a capacity of 2,730 megawatts, Attiyah said.
