Shiela remained unbeaten as the women's division of the AFTPA Independence Team Tennis Cup began at the Jeddah International School (JIS) tennis courts here. Sarawat-Shiela, playing under the sponsorship of Sarawat, dealt International Medical Center (IMC) its second loss in as many games and took command of the B2 Category. In the Thursday game, Sarawat's pair of Donna Cuevas and Gina Perez breezed past Nympha Sakay and Joy Farren of IMC at 8-4. IMC bounced back with an easy win as Weng Valencia and Beverly Osteria rolled past Reilyn Licyayo and Radz Ijiran, 8-2 and set up the deciding third set. There was no denying victory for Sarawat as team captain Shiela Harris with Tatah Martinez, underlined their supremacy and demolished Donna Martinez and Lilian Sy, 8-1, for a spirited 2-1 team victory. Sarawat-Shiela came back the next day, rallied from a set down and pounced on a much improved IMC team, 2-1. Sarawat's Donna Cuevas and Gina Perez battled from 2-4 and tied the score at 4-4, only to be broken back twice and yielded the game to Lilian Sy and Nympha Sakay, 5-8. Defiant Hazel Lozado and Radz Ijiran avoided the upset, survived a 2-5 deficit, shifted gear and quickly established authority with a 8-5 victory over a stunned IMC team. In the deciding set, buoyed by the second set victory, Shiela Harris and Tatah Martinez sustained the momentum in a clinical 8-4 win against Joy Farren and Edma Ladion. In the other women's Category C game, JIS-Sally capped its opening day best in uniform award with a well deserved 8-2, 8-4, 5-8 win over KAMC TC. In the men's division Category C, SG Concept defeated FAME 8-5, 7-8 (2-7), 8-3), Soliman Fakeeh Hospital bested Shelter 6-8, 8-3, 8-4, ALJID TGMO crushed NCB 8-5, 5-8, 8-5 and Shelter downed MEEC Yanbu 8-5, 6-8, 8-6. In Category B2, JBTP Lacoste 2 edged past JIS 8-6, 8-7 (10-8) 9-7 and ETC Swingblade-2 beat NCB 3-8, 8-5, 8-6. In the Lower Mix Category, JRTC-4 breezed past JBTP Lacoste 8-1, 8-0, 8-5, JBTP Lacoste 4 crashed out JRTC-5 8-1, 8-6, 2-8 and Toyota prevailed over ASTEC 8-4, 6-8, 8-6.
